Xenon bulb D2R – reflector without integrated ballast

The D2R equips vehicles with xenon optics with a reflector (without a projector lens), mainly Japanese models: Toyota Avensis, Camry, Honda Accord, CR-V, Nissan Maxima, Infiniti and some Subaru. A few older European vehicles also use it. The D2R is the reflector version of the D2S and works with the same separate D2 ballast. It is a less common reference than the D2S. The D2R is recognizable by the presence of a black opaque area painted on part of the quartz glass, visible to the naked eye when looking at the bulb. This mask creates the beam cutoff in reflector optics. The D2S, by comparison, has fully transparent glass. Both bulbs have similar dimensions and a similar base, but the keying features differ to prevent incorrect installation. The exact reference is engraved on the bulb’s metal base.

Yes, the D2R and the D2S use the same D2 ballast, because they have the same 35W power and the same electrical characteristics. The only difference is optical: the shield on the D2R. However, the D2R base has specific keying tabs that physically distinguish it from the D2S in the bulb holder. If your D2 ballast is working properly, a simple replacement of the D2R bulb is sufficient. AGM Vision offers both versions and compatible D2 ballasts.

The D2R is less common, because the trend in the automotive industry has been to favor projector lens optics (D2S) rather than reflector ones. Projector optics offer a more precise and compact beam, allowing slimmer headlight designs. Vehicles with reflector optics with xenon are mainly Japanese models from the 2000-2010 period. The D2R contains mercury, like the D2S. Its mercury-free version is the D4R, which uses a different gas chemistry and requires a specific D4 ballast. There is no mercury-free D2R, because the D2 designation implies the presence of mercury. For vehicles equipped with a D2 ballast, you must keep a D-series bulb (D2R or D2S). Switching to mercury-free would require replacing the ballast. Recycle used D2R bulbs at a recycling center, in accordance with regulations.

On Japanese vehicles, access to the D2R bulb is generally from the rear of the headlight, under the hood. Remove the rubber or plastic cover, unplug the ballast connector, turn the locking ring, then remove the bulb. Insert the new D2R by aligning the locating tabs, lock it, then reconnect. On some Toyota models, it may be necessary to remove the windshield washer reservoir or the battery to access it. The operation takes 20 to 30 minutes per side.
