Xenon bulb D5S – integrated low-consumption ballast

The D5S is a 25W xenon bulb with an integrated electronic ballast directly in the base, like the D1S and D3S. Its particularity is its reduced power of 25W (versus 35W for the D1S/D3S), which makes it more compact and energy-efficient. It produces about 2000 lumens and is mercury-free. The D5S was developed for the compact optics of recent vehicles. It notably equips certain Audi, Opel and Volvo models.

No, the D5S is compatible with neither D1 nor D3 ballasts, despite the same integrated ballast principle. Its 25W power rating and operating voltage are specific. The connector has keying features that prevent swapping. Installing a D1S (35W) in place of a D5S would overload the circuit, and a D5S on a D1 ballast would receive too much power. The D5S equips a limited number of vehicles: Audi A3 8V (2012-2016), certain versions of the Opel Astra J and the Opel Insignia A, as well as a few Volvo models. It is a transitional reference, which appeared when manufacturers were looking to reduce consumption before moving to full LED. The reduction to 25W of the D5S meets several objectives of manufacturers: to reduce the vehicle’s overall electrical consumption (important for CO2 standards), reduce the heat emitted in compact polycarbonate headlamps and allow a thinner headlamp design. The luminous flux of 2000 lumens remains sufficient thanks to the optimization of the arc tube and the associated optics. Manufacturers compensate for the lower power with better-quality lenses that concentrate the beam better.

Replacing a D5S follows the same procedure as other series with an integrated ballast (D1S, D3S). Access the rear of the headlight, unplug the connector, turn the ring a quarter turn and remove the bulb. Insert the new D5S, lock it, then reconnect. The operation takes about 15 minutes. The D5S is still manufactured, but in limited volumes, because the vehicles that use it are no longer produced new. Manufacturers have switched to full LED or laser for new models. However, the existing fleet will require replacement bulbs for another 10 to 15 years. The D5S is not at risk of disappearing from the market, but may become harder to find over time.
