The ballast for an H3 fog light kit must be mounted close to the headlight unit, while remaining protected from water and mud. The H3 xenon bulb physically fits into the same holder as the H3 halogen thanks to the identical base. However, replacement necessarily requires the addition of a xenon ballast, because the HID bulb does not work with a direct connection to 12V. The original optics (reflector and lens) are compatible, but beam adjustment may require an adjustment, because the xenon light source differs slightly from that of the halogen.
