Electronic components for automotive LED lighting

A power relay is an electromagnetic switch that makes it possible to control a high-current circuit (the one that powers the LEDs) from a low-current circuit (the one from the switch on the dashboard). Without a relay, all the current would pass through the switch, which would cause overheating and premature wear. The relay therefore protects the control circuit and ensures a stable power supply for the LED lights. Common relays for automotive LEDs come in 30A and 40A, in 12V and 24V versions.

If your vehicle displays an error message on the dashboard after installing LEDs, or if your LED turn signals flash abnormally fast (hyperflash), an anti-error module is required. Vehicles equipped with a canbus system (most European models since 2005) monitor bulb power consumption and detect LEDs as faulty bulbs. An LED flasher relay replaces the vehicle’s original relay and specifically manages the flashing frequency of LED turn signals. A standard relay is a simple power switch that opens and closes a circuit. The flasher relay is calibrated for the low power consumption of LEDs and maintains a steady rate of 60 to 120 cycles per minute. Without it, the vehicle detects an abnormally low consumption and speeds up the flashing (hyperflash). The two components have distinct functions and are not interchangeable.

A voltage regulator stabilizes the power supply and protects your LED lighting against overvoltage. The choice depends on the input voltage (12V or 24V), the desired output voltage, and the total power of the devices to be powered. For typical automotive use, a 12V to stabilized 12V regulator is sufficient to compensate for alternator variations (which can rise to 14,5V). To convert 24V to 12V on a truck, a DC-DC converter is required. Always check that the regulator’s maximum amperage exceeds your LEDs’ consumption.

Yes, standard blade fuses sold for automotive use are perfectly compatible with LED installations. The key is to choose the right rating according to the circuit current. Calculate the amperage by dividing the power of your LEDs (in watts) by the voltage (12V or 24V). For example, 120W at 12V = 10A, so a 15A fuse will be suitable. The electronic components (relays, fuses, anti-error housings) must be installed in a dry, ventilated and accessible location in the engine compartment. The ideal location is near the battery or the original fuse box, in order to minimize cable length. Secure the components with ties or brackets to prevent vibrations. The relays should be mounted vertically, preferably. Avoid direct proximity to the exhaust manifold (excessive heat) and splash zones. If an external installation is unavoidable, use watertight housings IP65 minimum.
