Switches and control buttons for LED lighting

For an LED light bar connected with a relay (recommended above 50W), a simple toggle switch is enough, because it only controls the low current of the relay coil (less than 1A). For small headlights connected directly (without a relay), choose a switch rated for the total current of the lighting (10A or 20A). IP65 waterproof models are recommended if the switch is exposed to moisture. Backlit versions make it easier to use at night.

Installation requires drilling a hole in the dashboard or on a mounting plate, to the diameter indicated on the product sheet (generally 20 to 25 mm). Use a hole saw or a step drill bit. Insert the switch from the front and secure it with the supplied tightening nut. Connect the wires: one wire to the ignition-switched positive (so that the switch only works with the engine running), the other to relay terminal 85. Secure the connections with crimp terminals and heat-shrink tubing.

It depends on the switch’s rated voltage. Some models are marked 12V/24V and work on both voltages. Others are specifically designed for 12V, and their backlight LED can burn out at 24V. The switch’s mechanical contacts generally support both voltages, but the maximum current may vary. At AGM Vision, compatibility is clearly indicated on each product sheet. For a truck or a heavy vehicle (24V), always check this specification before purchase.

The toggle switch (toggle switch) maintains its position: it stays ON when you activate it and OFF when you switch it off. This is the most common type for permanent LED lighting. The push switch (momentary switch) only remains active as long as you press it: it automatically returns to the OFF position. This type is used for strobe functions, horn or headlight flash. Some models combine both functions with a maintained position and a momentary position.

If the switch is installed inside the cabin (dashboard, center console), waterproofing is not essential. On the other hand, for installation on an external roll bar, a roof plate, or a mount exposed to splashes, a switch certified IP65 or IP67 is recommended. The IP65 rating protects against water jets, IP67 against temporary immersion. Waterproof switches have silicone seals and protective caps for the connection terminals.

The rule is simple: one switch per function that you want to control independently. For two LED light bars, two switches allow you to turn them on separately. For one bar with a night light and strobe, you need one switch for the main mode and one for the night light/strobe.
