Universal 12V relays for automotive LED lighting

The relay is an electromagnetic switch that makes it possible to control a high-power circuit (LED bar, additional headlight) from a simple low-power button in the cabin. When you press the switch, a low current activates the relay coil, which closes the main circuit supplying the LED bar. Without a relay, all the current (up to 30A) would pass through the switch, causing overheating and a risk of fire. The relay is therefore an essential safety component for any LED installation of more than 50W.

The 4-pin relay is the most common: it has two terminals for the control coil (85/86) and two terminals for the power circuit (30/87). It operates in normally open mode (the circuit is open at rest). The 5-pin relay adds an additional terminal (87a), which enables a switching function: the current can switch between two circuits. This is useful for alternating between two lights or for cutting one circuit when another activates. For a simple LED bar connection, the 4-pin is sufficient.

The choice depends on the power of your LED lighting. A 30A in 12V relay supports up to 360W (30A x 12V), which covers the vast majority of LED light bars on the market. A 40A relay supports up to 480W and offers a higher safety margin, recommended for powerful or multiple installations. As a general rule, choose a relay whose capacity exceeds by at least 20% the actual consumption of your installation in order to avoid overheating during continuous operation.

The wiring of a 12V relay follows a standard diagram. Terminal 30 connects to the positive of the battery via a fuse of a suitable rating. Terminal 87 supplies the LED light bar. Terminal 85 receives the control signal from the switch in the cabin. Terminal 86 is connected to the vehicle ground. When you activate the switch, the coil (85/86) is energized and closes the contact between 30 and 87, supplying the LED light bar. The fuse is always placed between the battery and terminal 30 of the relay.

Yes, a relay has a limited service life, generally expressed as a number of switching cycles (100 000 to 300 000 cycles for a quality automotive relay). Wear shows up as contacts sticking (the relay remains stuck in the closed position) or as difficulty activating. Overheating accelerates wear, hence the importance of not undersizing the relay relative to the load. A quality automotive AGM Vision relay will withstand years of normal use without any problem.

Yes, provided that the total consumption of the LED light bars does not exceed the relay capacity. For example, a 40A in 12V relay can power up to 480W of lighting, i.e., two 200W bars in parallel. Beyond that, it is recommended to use two separate relays, each powering a bar with its own fuse. This setup offers better safety and allows you to control each bar independently, with separate switches in the cabin.
