Medium-grain gray clay bar Chemical Guys: mechanical decontamination of the clear coat

The Chemical Guys medium-grade gray clay bar is a mechanical decontamination tool designed for heavily soiled paintwork. It captures particles embedded in the clear coat that shampoo cannot dislodge and restores a smooth feel to the bodywork, essential before polishing or applying a protection.

What the clay bar removes

  • Industrial fallout and atmospheric pollution
  • Embedded brake dust
  • Ferrous particles such as rail dust
  • Paint splatter and overspray
  • Tree sap

A medium grade for very contaminated paintwork

Chemical Guys offers its range of clays in several hardness levels. The medium-grade gray is used when the gentler versions are no longer enough: vehicles parked outside permanently, bodywork never decontaminated for years, surfaces that feel rough and sticky to the touch. For routine maintenance, the light blue clay bar or the yellow light medium-grade bar remain more suitable. Conversely, extreme contamination calls for the hard black clay bar.

Compatible surfaces

The manufacturer approves the use of this clay on paint, glass, stainless steel, metals, and aluminum. A lubricant remains mandatory throughout the process: the Chemical Guys Clay Luber spray is the product intended for this purpose by the brand.

A 100 g format that can be divided

The bar weighs 100 g and is worked in pieces. About one third is detached and flattened into a patty: the rest of the bar stays clean in its packaging, and only the saturated fragment ends up in the trash. This method clearly extends the lifespan of the clay over several jobs.

Instructions for use of the medium-grade gray clay bar Chemical Guys

Clay decontamination takes place after washing and before any protection. The rule to remember can be summed up in one sentence: clay must never touch a dry surface.

Prepare the bar

  1. Wash then dry the vehicle completely.
  2. Detach about one third of the 100 g bar.
  3. Knead this piece and flatten it into a patty in the hollow of your palm.

Decontaminate the bodywork

  1. Spray the Clay Luber lubricant generously on an area of about 60 x 60 cm.
  2. Slide the patty back and forth, without pressing, until it moves freely over the surface.
  3. Wipe the area with a clean microfiber, then move on to the next section.
  4. Inspect the patty regularly and fold it to expose a clean side.

Treat glass and metals

  1. Proceed in the same way on windshields, stainless steel and aluminum.
  2. Maintain the same level of lubrication, as these surfaces dry faster in the sun.

Precautions

  • A bar dropped on the ground must be thrown away: it traps small stones capable of scratching the clear coat.
  • Throw away any completely soiled fragment and start again with fresh clay.
  • Never work dry: the surface must remain lubricated at all times.
  • Clay leaves bare clear coat: apply a wax or a sealant right away.
