Chemical Guys Yellow Clay Bar: paint decontamination

The Chemical Guys yellow clay bar is a mechanical decontamination tool designed for bodywork that remains rough after a careful wash. Its light medium grade captures particles embedded in the clear coat and makes the paint smooth to the touch, without unnecessary aggressiveness, for regular maintenance.

What the clay bar actually removes

  • Brake dust thrown off by calipers and discs
  • Industrial fallout and ferrous dust known as rail dust
  • Paint overspray deposited in the workshop or by the roadside
  • Dried bird droppings
  • Superficial surface marks and embedded pollution that shampoo alone won’t lift

A light medium grade, for which paint

Chemical Guys offers its OG Clay Bar range in several hardness levels. The yellow version covers light to medium contamination levels: it’s the logical choice on a maintained vehicle, washed regularly, whose paint slightly catches under the finger. For very low contamination, the blue clay bar is sufficient, while the gray clay bar works faster on clearly loaded paint.

Compatible surfaces

It can be used on paint, glass, stainless steel, metal, and aluminum. Each pass is done on a generously lubricated surface, never dry, so that the pad glides without constraint.

A step that prepares protection

By reaching the pores of the paint, clay decontamination allows waxes and sealants to last better over time. That is why it comes before polishing and then applying a protection, and not the other way around.

Capacity

The bar is supplied in a 100 g format, to be divided into several reusable pads over the course of jobs.

The clay bar is never used dry. The protocol below summarizes the usage instructions published by Chemical Guys and applies to all compatible surfaces.

Decontaminate a bodywork

  1. Wash the vehicle starting with the roof in order to remove loose dirt.
  2. Spray generously Clay Luber Chemical Guys on an area of about 60 x 60 cm.
  3. Detach about one third of the bar and flatten it into a patty in the palm.
  4. Slide the patty back and forth over the lubricated area until it glides freely.
  5. Wipe the treated area with a clean, dry microfiber.
  6. Inspect the patty, fold it, and start again on a clean side before moving on to the next area.

Treat glazing and metal parts

  1. Lubricate the glass, stainless steel, or aluminum like a bodywork area.
  2. Work in small sections while keeping the surface wet at all times.
  3. Dry immediately with the microfiber to check the result by touch.

Good to know

The patty can be folded and reused as long as it is not saturated. If it falls on the ground or is completely soiled, throw it away and start again with a new piece: a trapped particle would scratch the clear coat. Chemical Guys observes among its customers an average use of about once every six months.
