Chemical Guys 100 g hard clay bar to decontaminate heavily soiled paintwork, glass and metals. It removes ferrous fallout, tree sap and paint overspray for a smooth finish.
The Chemical Guys hard black clay bar is the most aggressive clay in the range. It is intended for heavily contaminated bodywork, typically a vehicle over five years old that has never been decontaminated, or paint on which a softer clay no longer achieves anything. Used on a generously lubricated surface, it captures particles embedded in the clear coat that washing does not remove and restores a perfectly smooth feel to the finish.

Compatible surfaces
It is used on paint, glass, stainless steel, metal parts, and aluminum. Claying takes place after washing and before any polishing or protection step, on a clean, cool surface.
Which grade to choose
The hard grade is reserved for severe cases. On regularly maintained paint, the blue clay bar with a light grade is sufficient, while the gray clay bar with a medium grade covers intermediate contamination. The more aggressive the grade, the shorter the pass should be and the more attentive the visual inspection.
A lubricant is essential
Clay is never used dry. The Chemical Guys Clay Luber lubricant maintains a slick film between the clay and the clear coat, an essential condition for the bar to work without marring the surface. Without sufficient lubrication, the clay grabs and leaves marks.
When to decontaminate the bodywork
A clear coat that remains rough to the touch after a complete wash calls for decontamination. The check is done by hand, palm slid over the dry paint: the roughness you feel corresponds to embedded particles. On a very exposed vehicle, an annual pass before reapplying protection is generally sufficient, with the hard-grade clay remaining reserved for correcting paint that has been neglected for a long time.
Instructions for use of the Chemical Guys hard black clay bar
Clay decontamination requires a clean surface, plenty of lubricant, and working in small sections. Here is the method recommended by Chemical Guys
Prepare the vehicle
- Wash the vehicle thoroughly, for example with Citrus Wash and Gloss shampoo, in order to remove all non-adhering dirt
- Work in the shade, on cool bodywork
- Tear off about one third of the bar and flatten it into a patty in your palm
Use the clay
- Spray the Clay Luber lubricant generously on an area of about 60 x 60 cm, as well as on the clay patty
- Gently slide the patty back and forth, without pressing, until it moves freely over the surface
- Wipe with a clean microfiber, then check the result by touch
- Fold the clay to expose a clean side and move on to the next area
Precautions
- Discard the patty immediately if it falls on the ground: a trapped particle would scratch the clear coat
- Also discard the clay when it is completely soiled and no fold reveals a clean side
- Never let the surface dry out during use; re-lubricate as soon as the bar starts to grab
- Since the heavy grade is abrasive, reserve it for areas that are truly contaminated and follow up, if necessary, with polishing
Good to know
This 100 g bar covers several vehicles if it is folded regularly and kept away from dust, in its original packaging. After use, the paint is stripped bare and benefits from receiving protection (wax or sealant) right away.
