Modern lenses are made of polycarbonate coated with a surface layer, and this layer degrades under the effect of the sun's UV rays. The exposed plastic then oxidizes and takes on this yellow and milky appearance, which diffuses the light instead of projecting it.

What is the difference between a headlight restorer and a body polish?

A bodywork polish is formulated for an automotive clear coat, much harder than the polycarbonate of a headlight lens. The headlight restorer combines an abrasive calibrated for plastic and an anti-UV sealant, which a conventional paint polish does not do.

Should you sand the headlights before applying the restorer?

On a slightly hazy lens, the product alone is sufficient in the majority of cases. On a heavily oxidized headlight, Chemical Guys recommends wet sanding with 2000 grit, then 3000 grit, before applying the restorer with a machine.

The Chemical Guys Headlight Restorer and Protectant is a restorative polish designed for yellowed, hazy, or oxidized plastic lenses. It removes the degraded polycarbonate layer on the surface to restore the original transparency, then lays down a protective film against UV rays. It is aimed at motorists whose headlights have lost clarity, as well as detailers who want to treat a lens without removing it.

An adaptive abrasive technology

The formula is based on abrasive particles whose size decreases as the work progresses. The product starts by correcting oxidation, then gradually refines the finish up to the final polish. A single bottle thus replaces the compound-then-finishing-polish sequence on most lenses.

Compatible surfaces

The 118 ml bottle is enough to treat the two lenses of a vehicle occasionally. The 473 ml bottle is intended for regular use, in a workshop or on several vehicles, with exactly the same formula.

Instructions for use of the Headlight Restorer Chemical Guys headlight restorer

The product is applied by hand with a polishing pad, with a polisher, or with a drill attachment. The principle remains the same in all three cases: work on a clean and cool lens, keep going until the polish becomes clear, then wipe.

Prepare the lens

Wash the headlight and rinse it to remove dust and road residue.
Dry the surface completely with a clean microfiber.
Mask the paint and seals around the lens with adhesive tape.

Hand application

Place 3 to 6 drops of product on a microfiber or an applicator pad.
Rub the lens vigorously until the polish becomes clear.
Wipe off residue with a clean microfiber, then inspect the work.
Repeat the operation until you obtain a perfectly clear lens.

Heavily oxidized lenses

Wet-sand the lens with 2000 grit then 3000 grit, as Chemical Guys recommends for very oxidized headlights.
Rinse, dry, then apply the restorer with a rotary polisher or with a drill fitted with a 75 to 100 mm backing plate.
Keep the machine moving at all times so as not to overheat the plastic.
Wipe and repeat the pass as long as a haze remains.

Precautions

Work in the shade, on a cool surface, and immediately remove any splatter on paint or satin plastics. Close the bottle after use and store it protected from freezing. A final wipe with the Invisible all-surface cleaner helps check the result without leaving streaks.
