80 mm drill backing plate: restore your headlights without a polisher

The 80 mm drill backing plate is a rotary pad that attaches to a standard drill and turns it into a headlight restoration machine. It drives 80 mm diameter sanding and polishing discs, making it possible to treat dull, yellowed, or micro-scratched lenses without investing in a dedicated polisher.

Who this backing plate is for

  • Individuals who want to restore their headlights with the tools they already have
  • Detailing enthusiasts looking for a compact pad for small surfaces
  • Workshops that need a spare part for their headlight polishing kit

Why an 80 mm diameter

The 80 mm format matches the size of automotive lenses: wide enough to quickly cover the surface of a headlight, compact enough to follow its curves and work near the edges. It is the same pad as the one supplied in the Ø 80 mm headlight polish kit for drill: you can therefore buy it on its own, as a replacement for a worn pad or as an addition to your existing discs.

A simple and versatile accessory

Mounted on a corded or cordless drill, the backing plate lets you chain all the steps of restoration: progressive sanding to remove the yellowed layer, then polishing to restore the transparency of the polycarbonate. It is also used to revive small plastic parts or hard-to-reach areas where a large polisher cannot fit. Lightweight and compact, it fits in any toolbox and makes headlight restoration accessible to everyone, without professional equipment.

User manual for the 80 mm drill stand

The holder is used with a standard drill, corded or cordless. Before starting, clean the headlight with soapy water, dry it, and protect the bodywork around the lens with masking tape.

Sanding the headlight

  1. Attach the holder to the drill, then install the most abrasive disc.
  2. Sand the entire surface of the headlight in even passes, without pressing.
  3. Continue with the intermediate discs, then the finishing discs, wiping the lens between each step.

Polishing and finishing

  1. Fit the holder with a finishing disc or wool.
  2. Apply a headlight polish, such as the Polish Phare Headlight Restorer Chemical Guys, and work at moderate speed until transparency is restored.
  3. Wipe with a clean microfiber cloth to check the result.

Precautions

  • Work at moderate speed: too high a speed heats the polycarbonate and can mark it.
  • Keep the disc flat on the lens to avoid circular marks.
  • Do not stop after sanding: always finish with the polishing steps to restore clarity to the headlight.
