For a successful headlight restoration, several accessories are essential. Masking tape (painter’s tape) protects the bodywork around the headlight units during sanding. A water sprayer keeps the surface wet during sanding. Microfiber cloths are used to wipe between each step. A backing plate suited to the diameter of the discs is necessary if you use a polisher. Yes, masking tape is strongly recommended. When sanding, the abrasive can easily slip onto the adjacent bodywork and scratch the clear coat irreversibly. Apply 2 to 3 layers of masking tape all around the headlight, over about 2 to 3 cm of bodywork. Use a quality tape that leaves no adhesive residue (3M type or equivalent). For headlights that are not removed, also protect the hood and the bumper. The cost is minimal (a few euros), but the damage avoided can amount to hundreds of euros in paint touch-up.

For the finishing of headlights after polishing, use a short-pile and soft microfiber cloth, “finishing” or “buffing” type. Avoid long-pile microfibers, which can catch on the edges of the lens. The ideal weight is 300 to 400 g/m²: dense enough to absorb the polish without shedding lint. Use a clean and dry cloth at each step. Wash your microfibers in the machine at 40°C maximum, without fabric softener (which clogs the fibers). Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is very useful at two key moments. First, before sanding, to degrease the headlight and remove wax or silicone residues. Then, after polishing and before applying the UV protection, to remove the oils from the polish and ensure optimal adhesion of the varnish or coating. Use an IPA at 50% concentration (diluted with distilled water) and apply it with a clean microfiber cloth. Without this degreasing step, the UV protection may not adhere well and may peel prematurely.

Yes, removing the headlights greatly facilitates restoration: you can access the entire surface without the risk of scratching the bodywork, and you can work more comfortably on a workbench. However, removal is not always simple: some headlights require removing the bumper and unplugging the electrical connectors. On recent vehicles equipped with automatic adjustment sensors, removal may require recalibration.For an individual, restoration in place with masking is often more practical.
