Headlight restoration takes place in 4 steps. First, sanding with abrasives with decreasing grits (P800, P1200, P2000, P3000) to remove the oxidized layer. Then, polishing with a special headlight polish and a polishing pad to regain transparency. Then, buffing with a finishing product for a crystal-clear result. Finally, the application of a UV protection (varnish or coating) to extend the result for 2 to 5 years. Sanding is done with water to avoid overheating. Yes, headlight restoration is even recommended to pass the technical inspection. Since 2018, opaque headlights can lead to a re-inspection if the measured lighting is insufficient. Restored headlights regain up to 95% of their original transparency, which considerably improves the range and intensity of the lights. The inspector visually checks the condition of the lenses and measures the light output: clean and transparent headlights pass without any problem. It is a much less expensive solution than replacing the lenses (200 to 800 € per pair).

The replacement of a complete headlight lens costs between €100 and €400 per headlight (part only), or even more for LED or xenon models. For sanding, you can use wet sanding sheets (P800 to P3000 grits), by hand or with a orbital sander at low speed. For polishing, a dual action orbital polisher fitted with a foam polishing pad is ideal. Failing that, a polish can be applied by hand with a microfiber applicator pad. Pads come in several hardness levels: hard (cutting) for compound, medium for polish, soft (finishing) for the final buffing. Without protection, the result of a headlight restoration lasts 3 to 6 months before the cloudiness comes back. With the application of a UV varnish spray, the duration increases to 1 to 2 years. With a ceramic coating or a PPF protective film, the result can last 3 to 5 years. UV protection is therefore the most important step of the restoration. To maximize longevity, avoid direct high-pressure washes on the headlights and park your vehicle in the shade when possible.
