Polish metals Heavy Metal Chemical Guys: the shine of chrome restored

Chemical Guys Heavy Metal Metal Polish is a one-step polish designed for dull, oxidized, or stained metals. It is aimed at vehicle owners whose chrome, polished wheels, or exhaust tips have lost their shine, as well as detailers looking for a product capable of cleaning and protecting in a single operation.

What the formula does

Heavy Metal combines micro-abrasives and specific cleaners. The micro-abrasives work the surface layer of the metal to remove oxidation and light marks, while the cleaning agents break down embedded contaminants. A sealant is built into the formula: once polishing is complete, it remains on the surface and delays the appearance of corrosion and tarnishing.

Compatible surfaces

  • Chrome: trim strips, grille surrounds, bumpers
  • Stainless steel
  • Polished aluminum and alloy parts
  • Brass

Chemical Guys recommends always testing the product on an inconspicuous area before treating an entire part.

Typical applications on a vehicle

  • Chrome wheels and spokes
  • Exhaust tips and outlets
  • Chrome trim strips and hubcaps
  • Polished aluminum parts

Heavy Metal or Light Metal

The Chemical Guys range includes two metal polishes. Heavy Metal is the more aggressive of the two and targets noticeably oxidized metals. Light Metal, gentler, is used for routine maintenance of a finish that is already sound. On a metal that is simply dull, always start with the least aggressive.

The equipment to pair

The result depends as much on the product as on the applicator used. Use a microfiber applicator to apply the polish and a clean buffing microfiber for removal. On wheels, a prior degreasing with the Diablo wheel cleaner prevents loading the applicator with brake dust.

Instructions for use of the Heavy Metal Chemical Guys metal polish

Heavy Metal is used by hand, on a cool part and in the shade. The product works by friction: it is the repeated passes of the applicator, more than the amount applied, that produces the result. Always proceed in small sections, on a previously washed metal, so as not to drag grit across the surface.

Polishing a chrome or stainless steel part

  1. Wash and dry the part to remove dust and grit.
  2. Test the product on a small, inconspicuous area.
  3. Place 3 to 5 drops of Heavy Metal on a microfiber applicator.
  4. Rub the metal vigorously, section by section.
  5. Buff with a clean microfiber to reveal the shine.
  6. Repeat the operation until the expected result is achieved.

Treating exhaust tips

  1. Wait for the line to cool completely.
  2. Remove soot deposits inside and outside the tip.
  3. Apply Heavy Metal, focusing on the dullest areas.
  4. Make multiple passes over the heavily soiled parts, then buff with a microfiber.
  5. Finish with the inside of the tip, which concentrates the most deposits.

Precautions

  • Do not work in direct sunlight or on a hot surface, as for a classic polishing.
  • Always carry out a preliminary test before treating an entire part, especially on a metal whose finish you do not know.
  • Change the side of the applicator as soon as it is saturated with residues, otherwise you will redeposit the removed impurities.
  • Close the bottle tightly and store it away from frost and heat.
