Chemical Guys brown microfiber applicator pad: leather and vinyl without overdosing

The brown microfiber applicator pad is the benchmark in the Workhorse range that Chemical Guys reserves for leather and vinyl. It is aimed at those who maintain a leather upholstery, a wrapped steering wheel, or vinyl door panels themselves, and who want to apply a cleaner or a conditioner regularly rather than with a cloth. Its function is simple: carry the product, spread it, and nothing else.

A color code that prevents mix-ups

Chemical Guys assigns a color to each family of surfaces so that a pad is never used for two incompatible products. The official breakdown is as follows:

  • Brown for leather and vinyl
  • Green for paint
  • Yellow for carpets, fabrics, and textile upholstery
  • Gray for wheels, polished metals, and bumpers
  • Blue for the engine bay, tires, and exterior plastics, rubbers, and vinyls

Keeping the brown pad dedicated to the interior prevents bringing residues of tire dressing or wheel cleaner onto a light-colored seat.

70/30 microfiber over a foam core

The working face is a 70/30 microfiber wrapped around a Durafoam foam core. The foam absorbs hand pressure and distributes it evenly, which limits overloaded areas and missed areas. The edges are double-stitched inward so that the seams do not come into contact with the treated surface.

Which surfaces to use it on

  • Leather and faux-leather upholstery
  • Wrapped steering wheel, gear lever, and armrests
  • Vinyl door panels and trim
  • Soft dashboard plastics treated with a leather and vinyl product

Washable and reusable

The pad is machine-washable and can be reused from one maintenance session to the next. Chemical Guys recommends washing it regularly with a microfiber-specific detergent so that the fibers retain their absorbency. It is sold individually, which makes it possible to keep one per product: one for the cleaner, one for the conditioner.

Instructions for use of the brown Chemical Guys microfiber applicator pad

The brown pad is always used on a surface that has been dusted beforehand and with a product intended for leather or vinyl. The principle is to load little and spread a lot, section by section, rather than saturating the microfiber.

Clean a leather upholstery

  1. Vacuum the upholstery and the seams to remove dust and gravel.
  2. Apply three to six drops of leather cleaner to the microfiber side of the pad.
  3. Spread in straight lines over a limited area, for example a seat or a backrest.
  4. Go over marked areas again in small circular movements, without pressing.
  5. Wipe with a clean, dry microfiber before the product dries.

Apply a moisturizer or a protectant

  1. Use a clean brown pad, separate from the one used for the cleaner.
  2. Apply again three to six drops of cream or gel.
  3. Distribute in straight lines over the entire area, slightly crossing the passes.
  4. Let it soak in for the time indicated by the product manufacturer.
  5. Buff with a dry microfiber to remove excess and avoid a greasy effect.

Good to know

Always test the product on a less visible area before treating an entire seat, especially on light or perforated leather. Rinse the pad right after use to prevent the product from hardening in the fibers, then machine-wash it with a detergent for microfibers. Do not use the brown pad on wheels or in the engine compartment: residues would then end up on the upholstery.
