The main difference lies in the supply voltage. Light vehicles (cars) operate on 12 volts, while heavy goods vehicles, trucks, buses and some utility vehicles use a 24-volt system. A 24V LED bulb is specially designed with an electronic driver adapted to this higher voltage, ensuring stable operation and an optimal lifespan. Installing a 12V LED on a 24V circuit risks burning out the bulb instantly. Regulations distinguish between interior lighting and exterior lighting. To choose the right 24V LED bulb, start by identifying the original base indicated on the bulb or in the vehicle manual (H7, H4, H1, P21W, etc.). Then check the luminous output in lumens: a minimum of 40000 lumens is recommended for low beams, and 60000 lumens for high beams. The ideal color temperature is between 50500 K and 60500 K for a pure white. Also check that the kit includes a fan or heat sink suited to the space available in the headlamp housing. Many modern heavy trucks (Scania, Volvo, MAN, DAF, Renault Trucks) are equipped with a burnt-out bulb detection system (CAN bus). Since LEDs consume much less than a halogen bulb, the onboard computer may report an OBD error or cause rapid flashing. A 24V anti-error module (also called a CAN bus resistor) solves this problem by simulating the original consumption. The majority of motorhome base vehicles (Fiat Ducato, Mercedes Sprinter) operate on 12V for the engine section and on 12V or 24V for the living cell. Light commercial vehicles (up to 3.5 tonnes) are generally 12V. On the other hand, heavy commercial vehicles and motorhomes based on a heavy-duty chassis do indeed operate on 24V.
