H1 bulb technology: COB (Chip on board) or CSP (Chip Scale Package)?
What is COB technology?
The H1 COB bulbs are equipped with an older generation technology, which is cheaper. They do provide a significant luminous flux (up to 100 LM/Watts), but we strongly advise against buying them! It is clearly a technology to avoid nowadays, as it does not provide good road lighting.
The concentration of light emitted by a COB LED H1 bulb in a headlight optic is low. It is almost nonexistent in a projector headlight, where the light is very scattered. This phenomenon could be compared to a camera lens with poor focus.
Compared to a classic bulb filament, a COB LED chip is large. As a result, many light rays are lost or poorly channeled by the headlight reflectors. This leads to poor road visibility, a severe lack of detail in the main visual field, and low beams that cannot be adjusted. When COB bulbs are installed in reflector headlights, you will feel like you are on high beams, but still not see well ahead. Perfect for dazzling everyone!
CSP technology
The H1 bulbs equipped with CSP LED technology (Chip Scale Package) are more modern and emit higher lighting (up to 180Lm/W). As their name "CSP" suggests, the chips are miniature in size, which allows them to recreate the lighting of a halogen bulb with an incandescent filament. When you drive, your CSP LED H1 bulb will provide you with outstanding and precise visibility, without causing discomfort to other drivers. With a CSP LED H1 bulb of more than 10,000 raw lumens, you can multiply your lighting up to 5 or 6 times compared to the original. As you can see, the best choice is to go for an H1 LED equipped with CSP technology.
How to install CSP H1 bulbs?
Installation precautions for an H1 LED bulb
Be sure to choose a bulb that is compact enough, as H1 LEDs require a small footprint.
Check that your H1 LED has a 360° adjustable ring, which will give you a significant advantage for optimizing the light beam as well as achieving the most optimal lighting performance.
Installing an H1 LED bulb can be quite technical, especially when the location of your original bulb is positioned at 45°. If you fix your LED in this position, you will get an imprecise light beam and poor performance. With a 360° adjustable ring, you can adjust the position of your LED by rotating it until the emitting head of your LED is perfectly vertical at 90° in your headlight optic.
In some cases, you will find that you cannot rotate your H1 LED to make it vertical. You will then need to use a Dremel or a precision scalpel to slightly machine your headlight optic. Do not hesitate to contact us for any technical questions.
To date, no H1 LED bulb can be installed at 45° in the headlight optic without suffering a very significant loss in lighting performance. According to all our tests carried out in the workshop and laboratory, no LED positioned at 45° exceeds the performance of a standard H1 halogen bulb in this configuration. Only our H1 LED 360° bulbs will provide quality brightness and can be installed in a 45° position while maintaining lighting performance superior to an original H1 halogen bulb or a poorly positioned standard LED. If you have no choice, this H1 360° LED will be your only chance to benefit from the best LED lighting currently available.
The criteria for choosing your H1 bulb kit
To properly choose your H1 LED kit equipped with CSP technology, you need to identify your needs and your car model. In any case, two LED bulbs and a manual will make up your LED kit so that installation goes smoothly, simply, and quickly.
To avoid potential problems with your onboard computer, you can opt for anti-error H1 LED bulbs. This way, no error will be triggered on your dashboard!
Depending on the chosen LED kit, the criteria vary, including:
- The protection class,
- The material,
- The supply voltage,
- The power,
- The cooling system…
Remember to check the dimensions of your H1 bulb. This criterion must be taken into account in order to choose a bulb model compatible with your vehicle. These different criteria must be checked before any purchase. By taking them into account, you will be able to choose an H1 bulb that meets your expectations and is suitable for your vehicle. You will thus benefit from efficient and high-performance lighting over a long range.
