Wiring, Supports and LED Installation Accessories

Installing a LED light bar requires at minimum a wiring kit including a relay, a properly rated fuse, and a switch. You also need mounting brackets compatible with your type of installation (bull bar, roof rack, bumper). Depending on the setup, you can add waterproof Deutsch connectors to make removal easier, a wiring extension if the battery-to-bar distance is significant, and a waterproof cable gland to pass through the bodywork. The choice of the wiring harness depends on the power of your LED bar. For a light bar of less than 180W, a kit with a 30A relay and a 20A fuse is sufficient. For bars of 180 to 360W, choose a harness with a 40A relay or a dual relay, and a 30A fuse. Check the cable cross-section: 2,5 mm² for moderate power, 4 to 6 mm² for high-power installations. The harness must include a waterproof switch if the installation is exposed to bad weather. Each AGM Vision product sheet indicates the maximum supported power.

The Deutsch connector is an industrial-grade electrical connector, initially designed for the military and aerospace industry. It provides a watertight connection (IP67/IP68), resistant to vibrations and easily removable. For automotive LED lighting, it allows you to quickly disconnect an LED light bar without cutting the wires, which is convenient for maintenance or replacement. Deutsch connectors support currents of 13 to 25A depending on the model and withstand temperatures from -55°C to +125°C.

The type of mounting bracket depends on the mounting location. L-brackets (angle brackets) are suitable for mounting on a flat surface, such as a bumper or a plate. Clamps (tube clamps) attach to tubes with a diameter of 25 to 76 mm: bull bar, roll bar, or roof rack. Magnetic mounts offer temporary mounting, without drilling. Check that the mount supports the weight of your light bar and that it is treated against corrosion (stainless steel or anodized aluminum) in order to withstand bad weather.

Yes, a relay is essential for any LED light bar over 50W. The relay acts as a power switch, controlled by a low current from the switch in the cabin. Without a relay, all the current would pass through the switch, which would cause overheating and a risk of fire. A 30A relay is suitable for light bars up to 180W at 12V. Beyond that, use a 40A relay or a double relay. The relay is installed near the battery, protected by an upstream fuse, in order to secure the entire circuit.

Protection is based on three essential elements. The fuse, placed between the battery and the relay, cuts the circuit in the event of an overcurrent. Its rating must match the bar’s maximum consumption (e.g.: 20A fuse for a 200W bar at 12V). The relay isolates the power circuit from the control circuit. Finally, waterproof connectors (Deutsch type) prevent water infiltration, which could cause a short circuit. For multiple installations, a fuse box centralizes the protection of each circuit independently.
