H1 bulb technology: COB (Chip on Board) or CSP (Chip Scale Package)?

What is COB technology?

What is COB technology?COB H1 bulbs feature older-generation, less expensive technology. They do offer a high luminous flux (up to 100 LM/W), but we strongly advise against buying them! This is clearly technology that should be avoided nowadays, as it does not provide good road lighting.

The concentration of light emitted by a COB H1 LED bulb in a headlight housing is low. It is almost nonexistent in a projector headlight, where the light is very dispersed. This phenomenon could be compared to a camera lens whose focus is incorrectly adjusted.

Compared with a conventional bulb filament, a COB LED chip is large. As a result, many light rays are lost or poorly directed by the headlight reflectors. This leads to poor road visibility, a severe lack of detail in the main field of vision, and dipped beams that are impossible to adjust. When COB bulbs are installed in reflector headlights, you will feel as though you are using high beams, without actually seeing well in front of you. Perfect for dazzling everyone!

CSP technology

H1 bulbs equipped with CSP LED technology (Chip Scale Package) are more modern and emit brighter light (up to 180 lm/W). As their name, “CSP,” indicates, the chips are miniature in size, making it possible to recreate the lighting of an incandescent-filament halogen bulb. When you drive, your CSP H1 LED bulb will provide outstanding, precise visibility without causing discomfort to other drivers. With a CSP H1 LED bulb producing more than 10 000 gross lumens, you can increase your lighting by up to 5 or 6 times compared with the original. As you will have understood, the best choice is to opt for an H1 LED equipped with CSP technology.

How do you install CSP H1 bulbs?

Installation precautions for an H1 LED bulb

Installation precautions for an H1 LED bulb

Be sure to choose a sufficiently compact bulb, as H1 LEDs require little space.

Check that your H1 LED has a 360° adjustable ring, which will give you a significant advantage when optimizing the light beam and achieving the best lighting performance.

Installing an H1 LED bulb can be quite technical, especially when your original bulb is positioned at 45°. If you install your LED in this position, you will get an imprecise light beam and poor performance. With a 360° adjustable ring, you can adjust the position of your LED by rotating it until its emitting head is perfectly vertical, at 90°, in your headlight housing.

In some cases, you will find that you cannot rotate your H1 LED to position it vertically. You will then need a Dremel or a precision scalpel to slightly machine your headlight housing. Feel free to contact us if you have any technical questions.

To date, no H1 LED bulb can be installed at 45° in a headlight housing without suffering a very significant loss in lighting performance. Based on all our tests carried out in the workshop and laboratory, no LED positioned at 45° outperforms a standard H1 halogen bulb in this configuration. Only our 360° H1 LED bulbs provide high-quality brightness and can be installed at a 45° angle while maintaining lighting performance superior to that of an original H1 halogen bulb or a standard LED that is incorrectly positioned. If you have no other choice, this 360° H1 LED will be your only chance to benefit from the best LED lighting currently available.

Criteria for choosing your H1 bulb kit

To choose your H1 LED kit equipped with CSP technology, you need to identify your needs and take your car model into account. In all cases, your LED kit will include two bulbs and a manual to ensure that installation goes smoothly, simply, and quickly.

Criteria for choosing your H1 bulb kit

To avoid potential problems with your onboard computer, you can opt for error-free H1 LED bulbs. That way, no error will appear on your dashboard!

The criteria vary depending on the LED kit you choose, including:

  • Protection class,
  • Material,
  • Supply voltage,
  • Power,
  • Cooling system…

Remember to check the dimensions of your H1 bulb. This criterion must be taken into account to choose a model compatible with your vehicle. These various criteria should be checked before making any purchase. By taking them into account, you will be able to choose an H1 bulb that meets your expectations and is suitable for your vehicle. This way, you will enjoy effective, high-performance lighting over a long range.
