Choosing an H4 LED bulb: which technology?

Choosing an H4 LED bulb should not be done at random. When it comes to LED, two technologies are most commonly found: first-generation COB (Chip on Board) and CSP (Chip Scale Package).

COB technology LED chip

COB is most often found in low-end H4 LEDs. It is an older-generation LED technology that is inexpensive and reliable. But don't be fooled: this technology must never be used for your vehicle's front lighting! In fact, it provides imprecise and insufficient lighting. Once night falls, you will therefore not be able to enjoy satisfactory brightness, and this is not without consequences. What's more, you risk dazzling other road users.

Our workshop tests revealed that COB LED performance is inferior to that of a halogen bulb. The verdict is clear, not to mention the disastrous precision of COB LEDs, particularly for low beams. Since the light beam produced does not comply with regulations, you will have to remove your LEDs before every roadworthiness test, or risk failing.

CSP technology LED chip

CSP technology (Chip Scale Package) features small LED chips arranged on a very high-quality PCB. This technology is currently the best. It offers a higher luminous flux as well as better management of internal heat, resulting in much higher efficiency, given its reduced size (compared with a COB or even SMD chip).

CSP chips offer incomparable lighting precision, ensuring a successful roadworthiness test and a long service life.

CSP technology is constantly evolving, particularly with the arrival of the brand-new GaN High Power chip. This chip structure, with its improved geometry, makes it possible to multiply light extraction efficiency and thus delivers twice the power of the previous generation. The different cooling methods for an H4 LED bulb

The H4 LED bulb has different heat dissipation methods, depending on your vehicle's configuration and the space available:

• Passive cooling. Heat is extracted directly through the LED body and its aluminum fins. The main advantage of this type of cooling is its reliability, with no risk of mechanical failure.
• Active cooling. Here, heat is extracted using a fan, allowing for greater lighting power.
